This design merges the flags of Puerto Rico and the Philippines as a show of solidarity between both struggles. They were sold to the United States, along with Guam and Cuba, by Spain on December 10th, 1898, under the Treaty of Paris. As a colony and semi-colony to the U.S. today, both struggles for liberation continue to show solidarity to each other.
 
Above and below the flag are popular chants used in the Philippines and in Puerto Rico. 'Makibaka, huwag matakot' translates to 'Join the struggle! Do not be afraid!' 'Somos más y no tenemos miedo!' means 'We are more and we are not afraid!'
